Atomic Kitten – From Britain’s Biggest Girl Group to Just One Person Left

Published on October 17, 2025 by Jones Carol

You know what’s mad? The band Atomic Kitten used to be absolutely everywhere. I am talking about Whole Again on a loop, appearances on Top of the Pops every other week, and teenage girls all over Britain every single word. Now? In October 2025, the girl band Atomic Kitten is literally Liz McClarnon by herself. One person. That’s what’s left of one of the most successful pop groups Britain’s ever produced.

Let me take you back. When the group formed in Liverpool in 1998, the original members of Atomic Kitten were Kerry Katona, Liz McClarnon, and this girl Heidi Range, who left after eight months to join the Sugababes. Natasha Atomic Kitten Hamilton came in May 1999 to replace Heidi. That lineup is what really got them going.

Andy McCluskey from OMD put them together. Random choice, really. He wrote most of their early stuff. In November 1999, Atomic Kitten Right Now came out as their first single. Got to number 10. Decent start. They kept putting out singles through 2000, building their fanbase up bit by bit.

The Kerry Katona Atomic Kitten Drama Nobody Forgets

Kerry Katona Atomic Kitten, lasted from 1998 to 2001. People ask how long Kerry Katona was in Atomic Kitten, and it’s three years. Three years that got the group off the ground before everything went sideways.

Kerry Katona was in Atomic Kitten

January 2001. Whole Again drops. The song goes absolutely mental. Number one in Britain, No. 1 across Europe, selling millions. But get this. Why did Kerry Katona leave Atomic Kitten literally weeks before the song hit number one? She was pregnant. Found out she was having a baby and left the group just two days before Whole Again was released. The timing? Absolutely brutal.

Kerry has been fairly open about that since. She was 20 and pregnant and having a hard time with all kinds of stuff. She has discussed how the other girls weren’t supportive after she had told them that she was pregnant. That caused a massive rift. More than two decades later, they still loathe each other.

Jenny Frost came in from another group, Precious. February 2001. Right when they were exploding. She stuck around until their split in 2004; she returned for a few reunions thereafter.

Everyone Still Knows These Songs

Atomic Kitten Whole Again is their massive one. Everyone knows it. Still gets played at weddings now. Sold over a million copies just in the UK. Atomic Kitten Eternal Flame came next, their cover of that Bangles song. Also hit number one in 2001.

Atomic Kitten It’s OK got to number three. Looking at their Atomic Kitten songs list now, it’s actually quite impressive. The Tide Is High in 2002 was another number one. The Last Goodbye, Be With You, Ladies Night.

For about three years straight, they were pumping out hits. Then the hits stopped coming, and they split in 2004.

Who Was in Atomic Kitten Throughout Everything

Who was in Atomic Kitten over the years? Liz Atomic Kitten McClarnon from 1998 until NOW; she’s been there the entire time. Natasha Hamilton from 1999 until she left the show in October 2024. Heidi Range was very briefly in 1999 before she joined the Sugababes. Jenny Frost from 2001 to 2004, then on and off for reunions.

They’ve reformed loads of times. In  2005, they briefly reconciled. The year 2012 saw them back out on tour. Every so often during the 2010s, they did performances here and there. But there’s always been drama bubbling underneath, mainly around whether Kerry gets included or not.

People Keep Thinking Someone Died

Who died from Atomic Kitten gets Googled constantly. Nobody’s died. They’ve had health scares, though. Natasha Hamilton got skin cancer diagnosed in 2024. She thought a mark on her back was just a mosquito bite. Caught it early, thankfully. Kerry Katona had a cancer scare in July 2024 that scared her badly. But no actual deaths.

What Happened to Band Atomic Kitten and Why It Collapsed

What happened to Atomic Kitten is years of drama, massive fallouts and members who refuse to work together. In May 2025, Natasha Hamilton insists she won’t reunite with Kerry Katona. She told some podcast she’d work with Liz and Jenny again, but Kerry? Absolutely not. When you think they used to be best mates, that’s quite sad, really.

Kerry Katona and Natasha Hamilton

11th October 2024: Natasha announces that she is leaving after 26 years. In a post on Instagram, Natasha announced her departure and wished Liz well. That left Liz McClarnon as the only member of Atomic Kitten still in Atomic Kitten. One person is trying to keep a girl group going. A bit strange, really.

Kerry’s been vocal about feeling pushed out. When they did the 20th anniversary stuff, she wasn’t included. She was properly annoyed about it. She keeps saying she was a founding member and they’ve tried to erase her from the group’s history.

Where They All Are Now

Liz McClarnon is carrying on as Atomic Kitten solo. One person is a girl group. Doesn’t really work, does it? Natasha Hamilton moved on after leaving in October 2024, doing her own projects now. Kerry Katona does reality TV and media appearances. Jenny Frost lives in Spain with her family, staying out of it all.

The sad bit? They had absolutely everything. They were one of the biggest pop groups Britain produced. Millions of records sold, multiple number ones, world tours. But personal drama, bad timing, and relationships falling apart meant it all came crashing down. Now they can’t even be in the same room, never mind singing Whole Again together.

That’s the band Atomic Kitten’s story. Massive success, bigger drama, slow collapse, leaving one member standing. Looking at what they achieved and how it ended up is quite depressing. From millions of sales and number one hits to basically not existing. That’s pop music, though.
