How Gill Hinchcliffe Went From Yorkshire Roots to the Title of Lady White

Published on November 8, 2025 by Jones Carol

So, you all are familiar with David Jason, right? The one who’s been making us laugh with his dodgy schemes and three-wheeler van for the best part of his life. But how many of you have heard of Gill Hinchcliffe, the woman who’s been his partner for over two decades? Not many, I presume. Do you know why? Simple: she’s not one for the cameras. She never was, and I’m pretty sure she never will.

Born in 1960 in the small town of Mirfield in West Yorkshire, Gill is now 65. And she still keeps her personal life as private as humanly possible. And you know what? More power to her!

Working Her Way Up in Telly

Gill Hinchcliffe didn’t even want to act, believe it or not. She wanted to make television, not be on it; although she started in 1989 on a mini-series called A Bit of a Do, after that she landed on Stay Lucky as a unit assistant. Within a year, she was made a third assistant director. That is impressive when you think about it.

Throughout the early nineties, she worked on loads of British shows. The Darling Buds of May, The New Statesman, and a few others you might remember if you’re old enough. She was grafting away behind the scenes while everyone else was trying to get famous.

In 1995, she worked on Emmerdale as a unit manager. Some people occasionally get confused with Gill Hinchcliffe Emmerdale, and they believe she was acting in the show. No, she was managing locations and logistics, which is the stuff that keeps a soap running but nobody ever thinks about.

Meeting David on Set

So picture this: 1994, and Gill’s working as a location manager on A Touch of Frost. That’s where she met David Jason. He was playing Detective Inspector Frost, and she was sorting out where they’d film each scene.

David had lost his partner, Myfanwy Talog, to cancer the year before. They’d been together eighteen years. He wasn’t looking for someone new, but Gill just sort of happened. Sometimes life works out that way, doesn’t it?

What I reckon David appreciated was that Gill understood his world but didn’t want to be part of the circus. She’d seen how telly worked from the inside. She knew the difference between the person and the persona.

Becoming a Mum First, Then a Wife

In 2001, Gill had Sophie Mae. She was 41; David was 61. A bit late for both of them, but their daughter became the centre of their world. David’s said in interviews that being an older dad meant he couldn’t do all the running-about stuff, but Sophie was an absolute joy.

They got married four years later on 30th November 2005. Kept it tiny; just twelve people at the Dorchester. Sophie was a bridesmaid. Some guests didn’t even know it was a wedding until David and Gill walked in. That’s how much they valued their privacy.

On the same day, David collected his knighthood. So Gill became Lady White (White being David’s actual surname). Not that she makes a fuss about that either.

The Daughter Nobody Knew About

Right, this bit’s a bit mad. In 2023, David gets a letter from a woman called Abi Harris. She reckoned he might be her dad from a fling he had back in 1970 with an actress, Jennifer Hill. A DNA test confirmed it, so now he’s got a 52-year-old daughter he never knew existed, plus a grandson.

Can you imagine getting that news when you’re in your eighties? And can you imagine being the wife when your husband finds out?

But Gill handled it brilliantly. Told The Mirror she felt supportive from the start and was pleased to welcome Abi into the family. No drama, no resentment, just proper Yorkshire common sense and kindness. That takes some strength, that does.

What She’s Like Now

These days, Gill and David live quietly in Buckinghamshire with their daughter Sophie, who’s in her mid-twenties now. You’ll spot them occasionally at Wimbledon or Cirque du Soleil shows, which is normal family stuff.

Gill stopped working in telly back in 1996. Did an episode of Heartbeat as first assistant director, and that was her lot. She’d had a good run: seven years of solid work in the industry, but then she chose family instead. Can’t fault her for that.

Why She Matters

What gets me about Gill Hinchcliffe. She could’ve so easily become one of those celebrity wives who do the whole circuit: chat-show appearances, magazine interviews, reality telly, the works. But she’s never done any of it.

She’s been married to one of Britain’s most famous faces for nearly twenty years. Their daughter is lovely and grounded. And, when David had a surprise daughter and grandson, they welcomed them with open arms. And through all of it, Gill’s just got on with things. Rare these days, isn’t it?

That’s rare these days, isn’t it? Everyone’s putting their whole life on Instagram and TikTok. But Gill Hinchcliffe, a woman born in a Yorkshire town most people couldn’t find on a map and who worked her way up in television production, married a knight of the realm, had a child, and actually kept her dignity and privacy, represents something we do not see enough of.

She’s someone who’s comfortable in her skin and doesn’t need the world’s approval. She’s someone who knows what matters: family, loyalty, and living your life on your own terms.

The woman from Mirfield, who started as a unit assistant, ended up building something far more precious than any television career: an ideal family life that works. I’d bet you anything she’s happier than half the people chasing the likes on social media.

Good luck to her, that’s what we say.
